Why is the 9 button pressed to call the reception in many hotels?
The origin of this tradition dates back to the days when telephones had dials. In those days, the operator could be reached by dialing "9" and then the number called. Additionally, by dialing "0" the PTT switchboard would be asked for the number to be called. The "0" button at the bottom was preferred on the grounds that the "1" at the top of the dial could be turned by mistake. Thus, unnecessary occupation of the line was prevented, although it was very rare at that time. For this reason, "0" was accepted as the external line exit number in workplaces and hotels.
